"Swazi Gold" is the Stuff that Marijuana Dreams Are Made Of.
In one of the better produced VICE documentaries, we travel to the last absolute monarchy on the African continent - the Kingdom of Swaziland - to discover the processes and conditions of how what some call “the best ganja in the world” is grown.
A tiny landlocked country surrounded by South Africa on almost all sides (except to the east where it shares a border with Mozambique), Swaziland is home to some of the best marijuana in the world. This kind of cannabis goes by a unique name that both acknowledges its origins and quality - “Swazi Gold”.
Although the growing and cultivation of cannabis is not legal in the country, due to Swaziland’s dire economic situation, farmers - mostly older grandmothers seeking ways to provide for their families - have taken to growing this highly profitable crop. Unfortunately, because of the illicit nature of this industry, many farmers are often victims of crop theft or simply do not know how to penetrate the marijuana market.
In this two part documentary, we learn the history of the legendary Swazi Gold crop and see how it has impacted part of the Swazi agricultural, economic and social sectors.
